Craig Abell-Champion If you’re not listening to Willa Rouge you’re missing out on a renaissance of a post punk blender on full blast. This band takes real risks and pull off a compelling, dark and moody record that dips into several genres, often in the same song. John Carpenter to Ministry to The Swans and all masterfully cohesive, each track kept me sucked in and wanting more. Sleeping With Mirrors, a genre bender that stands out even among stand outs. Give it a go and tell your friends. You won’t regret it. Favorite track: Drive It Down.

You are my death The one I take out at night You are my regret The one that hides in the streetlight You are my death The pictures we rip with our hands You are my red dress The one I wear to the club You are my high heels The ones I wear when I kill You are my blue poem The one I could never write You are the blood on the road The car crash we never had You are the dirt in my mouth The grubs that squirm at night You are the cold light burning The rage hot in our eyes You are the hog-headed moon The one that squeals all night You are my red dress The one I wear to the club You are my high heels The ones I wear when I kill

What I'm Not 04:02
It’s a smash and grab And you’re running hot Laying face down in the gutter Becoming what I’m not Everything we worked for Is left behind A broken songbird, honey With nowhere to fly It’s a flash food warning Running through your head The walls are crashing down As you lie in your bed You can tell yourself This too shall pass Get behind the wheel And hit the gas

Night Eyes 03:41
You don’t know where you’re going, baby Your head is upside down You’re running around this town Turning inside out I didn’t know what I was wanting Never sure where I’ll find myself Lying down with whoever will take me This is where I’ll be found You’ve been looking for something, baby On the inside of your mind Trouble trails wherever you go But I’ll lie by your side You never say what you’ve been thinking Dark clouds cover up the sky It’s said “the heart is a hunter” I can run but you can’t hide We didn’t know that we’d find ourselves Face down and upside down Trying to make sense of nothing As you stumble around History is bruised and bloody All these years spent spinning round The earth rocks and cracks wide open And we’re falling down

You can exist if you save yourself The time has come to play our hand A psychic trip in a desert land You finally rose and feel alive The fear of knowing that they lie in wait A solo trip through your memories A price we pay to carry on on Praying that we never die We set our sights on the past Safe to say nothing will last You hold our child to your chest You’ll fight until your dying breath

Don't Go Far 03:01
Summer song On the radio Family picnic On the grass Mother says Don't go far Girl runs Across the field Down into Trees by the stream Down into Trees by the stream Sky turns red Clouds will bleed Mother says Don't go far Mother pointing Where she last saw her Mother pointing Down by the stream Girl laughing Her voice in the trees Girl laughing Her voice in the sky

about

One might think they're listening to a variety of bands when listening to Willa Rouge's "Sleeping with Mirrors." This is their debut release and it plays like a used cassette from a late 80s punk, sci-fi flick. Each track is a cultural scrape of its own, ranging from acid grunge, industrial music, minimal wave, goth rock, to synth-drenched, apocalyptic atmospherics dosed with paranoia, LSD, and alien encounters.

Willa Rouge is a two-man band from upstate New York and Brooklyn, a long-distance collaboration between Bentley Wood and Ian Caskey. It took a pipeline of file sharing to create this madness. They consider Willa Rouge more than just their band name, but as their vagabond muse, shadowy and mercurial, the one they follow song after song.

"Sleeping with Mirrors" was recorded and engineered January to June 2020.
